About the Conference
Despite a growing body of academic work, research on modern Spain remains dispersed across institutions and fields. The Spanish Political Economy International Network (SPEIN) seeks to increase its visibility within the academic community and public debate by bringing together economists, economic historians, and political scientists working on the political economy of Spain, and by providing a platform for the exchange of ideas, ongoing research, and new projects.
About the SPEIN Workshop 2026
This workshop, supported by the King’s Global Engagement Partnership Fund, focuses on the institutional foundations of modern Spain, from state formation and political conflict to the emergence of authoritarian rule, its long-run consequences, and the return to democracy. Spain’s experience with competitive authoritarianism, dictatorship, and democratic transition during the twentieth century provides a useful reference point for understanding how such systems emerge, operate, and change.
